The GMail SMTP server requires an SSL connection and authentication.
How to setup?
* In setup-alerts-smtp-primary (or alternate):
mailhost: smtp.gmail.com
* In setup-alerts-smtp-primary (or alternate)-advanced:
use SSL: checked
authentication: ESMTP
username: your_email@gmail.com
password: your_gmail_password
port: 465
